Mrs. Meyer has a lot her mind: prom, classes, volunteering, the Miss Green Wave pageant, and the list goes on.

She has been teaching for fourteen years, starting at a private school and then coming to SHS.

“I actually worked at a private school my first year, because when I graduated, teacher cuts had gone in effect in South Carolina and I couldn’t find a job,” Meyer said.

After sending multiple resumes out, she was hired by Summerville High School.

“Summerville High School was one of the first schools that called me to do an interview, and they actually hired me on the spot,” Meyer remembered.

She found her love for teaching through her previous years in schooling.

“I had a horrible high school experience, I guess what you could call ‘getting bullied’ in today’s terms. I chose to graduate a year early, so that I could get out of the horrific situation that I was in… I had some teachers that really made a difference in my life,” she said.

Her mom was a gymnastics coach, and working with her and other teachers made her want to do the same things they did with students.

Mrs. Meyer tends to do things differently, saying that she prefers an interactive classroom, compared to a quiet one.

“I can’t stand it, I want them talking and interacting with me… I don’t do the ‘raise your hand’ deal, I just want them to have a conversation… and as long as they get along, that to me is an awesome class,” Meyer explained.

Not only does she teach honors and AP classes, she also runs the school’s prom committee.

Her favorite part is decorating, despite it being a lot of stress.

“It’s a lot of work and a lot of hassle, but it’s a lot of fun and I like seeing the finished product, and seeing the students reactions… I’m so thankful at the end of the night, and they were all leaving going, ‘We get a prom favor? Thank you!’ and that really made me feel good,” Meyer said.

She is loved by many as a fun teacher, and even her past students still think of their old days in her class.

“I loved how she taught: she taught in a way that we could completely understand and relate to,” Zoey Fuller, former student of Mrs. Meyer, said.

Despite doing so much work for her different duties, Meyer doesn’t plan on stopping.

She is a phenomenal teacher! Mrs Meyer goes well beyond what is expected from her students and truly impacts their lives for the better. I was so blessed to be in her class in ’06. I am happy to see this well-deserved recognition!
