On Thursday, Dec. 7 the girls varsity basketball team helped coach the Bethany girls youth basketball team to improve their skills.

“[The] younger girls loved being with the high school girls. Definitely enhanced the basketball experience since many of them are so new to the sport,” said SHS registrar and volunteer Bethany youth basketball coach Rachel Page. “To actually see the high school girls play/dribble/shoot was a totally new experience for many of them.”

“We enjoy any and every opportunity given to us that allows our varsity girls the chance to ‘give back’.  They have no idea how much of an impact they can have on the younger girls,” said varsity basketball coach Layla Digby.

The varsity team is also taking part in the Charleston Hope program Adopt a Classroom, which gives Christmas presents to less fortunate students at Title 1 schools.

Charleston Hope was founded by Emily Hoisington in 2011, when she and some of her friends gave Christmas presents, a party, and quality time with 40 low-income students in her sister’s 4-year-old class.

Since that Christmas 6 years ago, over 12,000 students have received gifts in Charleston, Clemson, and Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Akron, Ohio.

“This has been such a great experience so far and we haven’t even gotten to the best part yet!  They took great pride in being able to buy gifts for those less fortunate and knowing that they are doing something good for the community,” said Coach Digby. “They have embraced this much more than I thought they would, and as a coach, you can’t ask for more than that.”

The varsity girls basketball team has been performing on and off the court this holiday season. The team is undefeated at home and is playing Ashley Ridge at home tomorrow night.
