Soon enough, most students in high school will have to have their individual graduation plan, also known as an IGP. The goal of an IGP is to discuss future classes, graduation, university applications, vocational school, and early college.

Most students have been doing IGP’s since 8th grade, so they are comfortable with the process. Most IGP’s revolve around next year’s classes.

In an IGP, you have to actively go out of your way to ask questions. Your guidance counselor is there to help you with your goals, not give you them. You job is to guide the conversation so that your counselor will be able to narrow down the important steps you need to take in regards to classes.

“My guidance counselor was helpful, but the resources I used the most were online websites catered to students,” said Skylar Rogers, a junior student at Summerville High School, “These websites helped me tremendously because they are filled with easily-accessible resources for applications and lists of scholarships that some guidance counselors might not know about or go through manually.”

The first step for your IGP is to plan out the classes you are interested in, which classes you need to take, and the classes you want to know more information about. Something that might help you is to make a list of things you are interested in, career wise.

“My first IGP was really fast because I didn’t know what to ask, talk about, or where to begin,” said Zack Sowards, a junior, “The more IGP’s I had, the more information I knew to ask about.”

Another important topic that you can bring up during your IGP is standardized test scores: the ASVAB, SAT, ACT, etc. The College Board website contains tons of helpful information regarding due dates and standardized testing locations.

Actively discussing everything that you find important about your future classes and college can make your IGP much more productive. You can get in depth information on scholarships, internship opportunities, and classes related to a major you are interested in.

As any student, especially if you are a senior, having a idea about what you want to major in can be a real help you find classes that are offered in our school related towards your goals.

Your IGP is pretty important, but it’s not the end-all be-all. You don’t have to be nervous, your school counselor will always be there to help!
