On November 3rd, the Summerville High School Competitive Marching Band (or CPE) competed in the SCBDA State Championship. They managed to get into the finals and went home with third place.

Just like the Bands of America Competition in Florida a few weeks ago, the CPE has been preparing for this event for a long time, with numerous practice sessions and a large amount of dedication. With these practices and dedication, the band emerged into the finals and got third place in the event. A very great feet. With this, the musicians and the director all feel very proud of their accomplishment.

“A lot of time went into the preparations.” said Jude Martin, trumpet player in the CPE and freshman at Summerville High School. “It wasn’t that stressful, but sometimes it was because of school…The ending is the best part of events like these, as you can see if you won or not.”

Another player in the CPE reiterates.

“Well, we practiced Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and sometimes we practiced on Friday and Saturday. It took a lot of sacrifice.” said Elijah Danjoint, freshman at Summerville High School and saxophone player in the CPE. “Performing isn’t stressful as long as you stay focused. It is a very fine experience. Our state competition was the best. In the beginning of the season, we got a bit behind, but we pulled it all together for out state competition and it was really fun.”

However, the director’s opinions are different.

“We poured hundreds of hours into the preparations.” said Mr.Gilreath, band director at Summerville High School. “Community pressure to succeed can be pretty intense. Seeing the students grow and enjoy their performances is the best part of events like these.”

Although the CPE did not do as well as they wanted to in the Bands of America competition, they nailed it for the State Competition. Third place is an great feet for a state competition as it shows off how great the band is and it shows how much dedication, sacrifice, planning, and school spirit there is. People enjoy these events as they get together to do one of the many things they love the most, playing together.

The band kids love to get together and play for the competitions. Even if they do not do as well as they may hope, they still have a lot of fun in the process. With this, the CPE is determined to get an even higher place next year and show an even greater amount of school spirit.
