On Tuesday, Feb. 13, SHS Honor Choir gave students a surprise performance in the cafeteria at the beginning of ILT.

They performed the song “Total Praise” by Richard Smallwood, a classically trained black musician, in honor of Black History Month.

“[Richard Smallwood has] got a lot of choir music out there and he’s recorded with orchestra too. I thought yesterday would be a nice tribute to that,” said Mr. Richardson, SHS choir director. “We do have black classically trained musicians that we can lift up and celebrate, not only for Black History Month, but everyday.”

The performance began with soloist Janae Greene singing alone on stage. A few moments later, the rest of the choir, dispersed randomly throughout the cafeteria, joined in. This flash-mob style concert confused the unaware students enjoying lunch at first, but they quickly became entertained and offered their attention to the singers.

“For Black History Month, [since] I am new to Summerville, I don’t know of any Black History Month traditions here, like a program,” said Mr. Richardson, “so I always try, [during] the month of February, to teach that there are black classical musicians and that there are people that match up with any Western composer that we would study, like Bach or Mozart.”
