On October 16th, Summerville High School hosted the Academic Awards. It is a tradition that started in 1995, and since that time, over twelve thousand students from all three high school have received awards.

There are two categories of awards: the Academic Award and the Board of Trustees Award. A student gets an academic award by earning all A’s and B’s from the previous year, but to also get a Board of Trustees award, a student must get all A’s from the previous year. If a student gets an academic award, they will get a medal, and if they get both awards, they will receive a medal and a certificate.

This year Summerville had the most students to gain an academic award or board of trustees at 389 recipients. Academic awards help to motivate students all year to get good grades so that they can invite their families and be proud of an achievement in front of hundreds of people.

Students had to get to the main gym at 5:45 on Tuesday night, and the awards started at 6:30. The ceremony started when Mr. Pye, the superintendent, began to give his opening speech congratulating the students, complimenting the parents, and thanking the teachers for the hard work that all of them do.

Ms. Kornahrens, the Assistant Superintendent began her speech with a prayer for all the students to continue their hard work and keep good grades. Mrs. Robinson, the Chair of the Board then talked about the history of the awards, the reasoning behind them, and their importance. Ms. Raynor the public information officer acknowledged the sponsors that gave towards the fund of the awards ceremony.

Then Mr. Farrell, SHS principal, and Mrs. Plane, Leadership teacher, SHS Teacher of the Year, and Dorchester Two teacher of the year, made speeches and the awards began.

First, the students who achieved a board of trustees regardless of grade stood up in their rows of chairs, got their medals and them shook hands with Mr. Pye, Mrs. Robinson who also gave them their certificate of trustees, and Mr. Farrell, and then walked off the stage back their rows and when the whole row was filled, they sat down. The same thing happened with the students who achieved academic award, except they did not get the certificate.

After all the students received their awards, Ms. Raynor and Dr. Glen Huggins gave the closing remarks. The ceremony ended with the singing of the Summerville alma mater.

At the end of the night, there was an optional reception in the cafeteria with cookies, punch, water, and a lot of picture taking.
