Summerville’s Ava Butler and Quinton Stanley were selected to perform at the 2018 Piccolo Spoleto Rising Stars on May 28.

It is a 17 day event that features young people in music, dance, vocal, theater, creative writing, and visual art. Spoleto is a very competitive program that highlights the talented youth of the Southeast (SC, NC, GA, TN, AL, MS, and FL).

Because of how prestigious this festival is, it is a great honor to be selected.

Ava, freshman, and Quinton, junior, both dance at Magnolia Dance Academy, they will perform a contemporary duet titled “Give Me One Reason.”

At their most recent competition, Dance Machine, they won 1st overall in the Advanced Senior category, and a scholarship to attend Dance Dreams Summer Intensive in New York.

Preparing for this festival has been a struggle for the duo. Due to certain circumstances, they had to change a bit of the choreography.

“We changed some of the choreography because it was difficult to execute, and we wanted to put our best foot forward. We changed it the day of competition [Dance Machine]” said Ava Butler.

Quinton has been dancing for 14 years, and Ava has been dancing for 12 years. They all had their own hardships where they seriously thought about giving up but kept going.

“There times when you think you’ve hit your limit. Then someone comes along and proves you wrong, and you keep going” said Quinton Stanley.

Being able to perform in this festival is a very great honor, and everyone knew that except Quinton.

“Funny thing is I don’t really know what this festival is. Everyone is very excited about it, and I’m told that this is a great honor” said Quinton Stanley.

Ava and Quinton are both great students in academics and dance. There perseverance has gotten them to perform at a very honorable festival. Good luck to them in the Piccolo Spoleto Rising Stars and their future in dance.
