The weekend of Nov. 4 the Summerville High School Marching Band went to Columbia, SC, to participate in a state-wide band competition. In all 16 bands performed from all around our state. Wando High Schools band placed 1st with a score of 95. Summerville High School band scored 3rd place and a score of 90.

This season band has won two out of the three competitions they attended. They won Charleston Southern University band competition and won the annual Western Carolina competition. Last year, the marching band went to Western Carolina for a competition and placed Overall Grand Champion, and at Charleston Southern University won first place.

Most students participating in band have practice after school every single day except Wednesday and Sunday, and stay for 2-4 hours depending on the day. Many students sacrifice school and their social life for the band and hope to join a University band and continue to take part in band activities.

Many of the students participating in band have been on the team since they were in 8th grade. They have put in years of hard work and practice to achieve this level of proficiency. They have dedicated their lives to the SHS band.

“I have always enjoyed band performances, you can tell they have put in a lot of hard work and time” said Caitlyn Hyewet, sophomore.

Last year the band was not able to take part of Bands of America due to Hurricane Matthew related issues, but they did not let that dampen their mood for this year.

“The fact that we didn’t get to go to Bands of America was really disappointing but it makes sense we wouldn’t have had a lot of time to practice and perform at our best. Since then, I feel we have become better than ever and I hope that we get to go sometime when I’m still in high school” shared Hailey Lippy, sophomore.

Summerville High has a dedicated band, and it shows up on the field during their performances.
