It’s getting late in the college application season, and now seniors may be worrying about getting teacher recommendations. If you already got yours, great! If not, here are some tips.

Ask early: You should be asking for recommendations three weeks to a month before you need it. This will give the teacher time to write a good, personalized letter. Remember, your favorite teachers may be writing recommendations for a lot of other students and will be pretty busy.

Choose a teacher wisely: Find a teacher that knows you well. Pick a teacher from a class you talked and participated in. A teacher that knows you outside of the classroom or one that has also helped you in extracurriculars will be able to say more about your character. You want a teacher from an academic class; one that teaches the subject you plan to major in would be great.

Give them a lot of information: Tell them about what you plan to do in college and in your career. Talk to them about extracurriculars. Remind them of some good moments in their class that you’re proud of or that reveal something important about you that you want mentioned. It’s best if you write all this down for them to reference when they’re writing your letter. Most importantly, make sure they know the deadline for their letter.

Give the teacher an envelope and stamp: Colleges like sealed recommendation letters that the student hasn’t seen. If you want a teacher to send your letter straight to a college, don’t make them pay for the stamp. It’s rude.
Follow up: You know teachers. They lose papers and forget things all the time. A week before you need the recommendation, check and make sure they’re getting it done and sent.

Be nice: Tell them thank you. A lot. Thank them when they agree to do it, thank them when you give them the information about you, thank them when you check on them, thank them after. Just be nice.
