Sophomore Lizzie Naval is primarily known as the tennis, cross country, and track athlete. Now, she is known for something else: on January 7, Lizzie won the title of Miss Summerville Teen.

Lizzie had never really thought about doing pageants before, but this year something changed.

“My really good friend Sydney Lima convinced me to do it but I was a little hesitant about competing in the pageant at first” said Naval.

All her life she was based around sports. Ever since she was little she was playing tennis and then during middle school she got into cross country. Due to Lizzie’s openness to new things, her life altered.

“I never really thought of myself as a ‘pageant girl’ but I was excited to try something different and I really enjoyed it” Naval said.

As Miss Summerville Teen, she represents our town during events and other pageants.

“Our jobs as title holder is to serve our community, represent community well, and to raise awareness for our platform. Our crown has four points which we represent service, scholarships, style, and success,” she said.

Each title holder has certain platforms. Lizzie’s platform is S.T.A.N.D. S.T.A.N.D is a guidance program that stands for Stand Tall and Never Doubt.

“This is a guidance platform geared towards young teens that are transitioning from middle school to high school” Naval said.

This platform is very important to her because she has experienced these same things and doesn’t want others to feel this way.

“I myself have experienced social exclusion and it is a very hard thing to overcome. During that time I wished I had someone to talk to that understood what I was going through and could help me overcome it. I want to be that person for someone,” said Naval.

Since Lizzie won the title, she has been involved in many different events such as Family Expo, volunteering at the tennis tournament to benefit the ARK, school visits to raise awareness for S.T.A.N.D to K4 -first graders, and IHOP’s national pancake day to benefit the CMNH.
“The opportunities [my title] has brought me have been amazing and I am so thankful it all. I am thankful for the people I have met and the experiences I have made,” said Naval.

Naval will compete June 20 – June 24 in Columbia for the title of Miss South Carolina Teen.
