Ms. Adkinson is a new history teacher here at SHS as of January. Filling in as a teacher comes with a lot of pressure because the new teacher has to take in a whole new group of kids halfway through the year. This can be hard on the teacher as well as the students; however, for Ms. Adkinson, things seem to be going rather smoothly.

“When I first got her I thought to myself ‘these kids are going to hate me,’ but once I took over I think we all adapted to the change really well. They are an amazing group of kids and I have truly enjoyed getting to know them” stated Adkinson.

Transitions can be hard for many people. Before coming to Summerville to teach, Ms. Adkinson worked at Givhans Alternative Program where she taught 8th grade SC History, Economics, Government, and World Geography.

“The only big difference between GAP and SHS is the size of the school and having to teach 30 kids in a class… at GAP the classes had like 10 kids or less in each class” said Adkinson.

Ms. Adkinson has been teaching for 5 years now. She was inspired to teach because she used to tutor her nephews who struggled with English and Social Studies when they were in high school. It was then that she realized she wanted to help other students and that her talents would be better utilized in a classroom.

“Ms. Adkinson is a really chill teacher and she has helped me learn and comprehend a lot of things that I couldn’t understand at first. She is a friend and teacher all in one” stated Andre Wright, junior.

Many teachers have favorite memories from teaching, Ms. Adkinson on the other hand has more of a favorite moment when teaching

“The ‘lightbulb’ moment is my favorite part of teaching. Whenever a kid reaches comprehension and starts tying concepts together their face changes and lights up and they speak confidently about the content. I love seeing that moment” Adkinson stated.
