Thursday, Oct 13 was senior night for the seniors on the varsity volleyball team. The seniors walked out with their families and were showered with flowers and gifts from their friends and family. These seniors have been together for almost 2 or more years, depending on when they joined the team. The seniors on the volleyball squad agree: they have learned to love each other as a family and work together to become one with not only their fellow seniors, but with the other grades on the team as well.

“As a team our chemistry is great, most of us have been playing together for years and we treat each other as if we’re family rather than just a team. We know each other very well and we can always depend on other girls on the team to give their all in every play which helped us thrive through this season,” said Payton Stokes, senior.

“Our year is going very well. We have learned to play hard every time we step onto the court and I believe it is because our coach always says, ‘you are only as good as your last victory’” stated Alexis Williams, senior.

With a new year, comes a new coach, and the girls are more focused than ever.

“There’s always room for improvement but communication and paying attention to what coach is saying is our biggest thing.” Kenzie Schmaltz, senior, said.

This is a special year for the seniors, with a new coach who has a nice record from the past leads and guides them to a year of victory.

“I’ve been head coach for 32 years, but 31 of them were spent in Connecticut high schools. There I had 512-157 won-loss record and was inducted into their Volleyball Hall of Fame. For the first year of SHS, I am enjoying this opportunity,” said Paul Thees, varsity volleyball coach.

The team won on Senior night with an overall win of 2-0 against cross-town rivals, Ashley Ridge. It was a constant fight of both teams scoring, but Summerville came out on top: the icing on the cake for the senior athletes.
