Imagine Patterson is not only this year’s Prom Princess, but our very own nationally ranked runner. We all know her as the local celebrity athlete, but underneath the heavy weight of her medals is a down-to-earth, easy going persona. This interview poses as a glimpse into the real girl.

Anabelle Baxter: What is your official national ranking?
Imagine Patterson: It depends. It changes throughout the season because people run [and compete] every weekend, it just all depends. But I won a national championship last summer in July. In the USATF Junior Olympics, I’m the national champion.
AB: That is amazing, very impressive. I remember when you were a freshman going “Oh I’ve started track!” Has that been your greatest achievement track-wise?
IP: Yes!
AB: That’s what I thought. And how do you feel when you compete?
IP: Nervous. I hate running. It’s nerve wracking, it’s the most stressful thing.
AB: Then why do you do it?
IP: I’m good at it, and it’ll pay for college.
AB: Well. since you were at one point or are number one nationally, how did you get there? What do you do?
IP: You train all the time. I trained from September to July, I get August off every month. But I train the rest of the year. You just train A LOT.
AB: 11 out of 12 months a year? That’s insane! Do you train daily?
IP: Yeah, daily. Except for weekends, I have weekends off, because weekends you have track meets.
AB: How many hours do you train a day?
IP: Two. About 10 hours a week.
AB: I’m not even gonna do the rest of the math on that. Now, obviously people are more multidimensional than they first seem. Track is not your entire life, well, not at least for one twelfth of it, so how would you describe yourself?
IP: I’m a homebody, actually. I don’t like going out places, well, I do but I don’t. I would rather be at home because I’m just kind of lazy, and all of my time goes to running, so when I’m not running I just want to sit down. I like watching Criminal Minds on Netflix a lot. But I do like the mountains. The mountains are my absolute favorite, I go there for my birthday every year.
AB: Where in the mountains?
IP: Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
AB: I used to live in Utah for six years and we were right smack in the middle of the mountains. I hiked them constantly.
IP: Nationals this year was in Sacramento, California, when I won. And so we were there for eight days, so we went to Lake Tahoe, which is a lake surrounded by mountains. And the lake is really shallow, so I went stand-up paddleboarding, and you could go like 30 feet out [with it still being shallow]. And they actually say the water or the air or something around there is better for athletes. It’s good for your body.
AB: Maybe because it’s cleaner?
IP: Something to do with the [air] pressure because of how high you’re up.
AB: Well now that’s on my bucket list of places to go. Are you passionate about anything?
IP: I really like to eat. I like to eat and cook. I feel like if you like to eat then you have to know how to cook.
AB: What kind of stuff do you cook?
IP: I like cooking breakfast. But when we’re going home, I like to make creamy baked fish over rice. It’s like, you bake fish for an hour and then put alfredo sauce on it and a bunch of spices on it and you serve it with rice, and I like to mix it all together.
AB: Last weekend I just made fresh pasta. First time making it too, it was supposed to be pappardelle, which are like regular noodles but thicker, but they turned out a little bit swirly. But it still tasted good.
IP: It doesn’t really matter what it looks like, that’s for chefs to worry about.
AB: Yeah, it’s supposed to look rustic. Anyway, last question, why do you think you were voted Prom Princess?
IP: I think I was voted Prom Princess because, well, I told a bunch of people to vote for me, and also because I feel like I have a cool personality. I feel like people enjoy talking to me and having conversations with me, so they feel comfortable with me. I think I’m an easy person to like.
AB: I can definitely pick up on your comforting persona, as did most people!

Track star, homebody, prom princess. The sides of Imagine blossom into full view. Perhaps there may even be more layers than shown here, nevertheless, the introduction to her well-roundedness was a breath of fresh air. And a reminder that I hadn’t eat lunch yet and I was starving. Alfredo fish, anyone?
