Directed by Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 biographical war movie starring
Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, and Luke Bracey. The movie begins showing Desmond Doss almost killing his younger brother as a child. This event follows Doss through the rest of the movie, reinforcing his belief in the commandment “thou shalt not kill”.

Years later, Doss decides he wants to serve in the army as a combat medic. He doesn’t want to kill anyone, but wants to help those who are hurt. While in training, Desmond Doss excels at any and all physical portions; however, other soldiers don’t accept him or his beliefs. Doss is constantly beaten and belittled for his decision to not carry any weapons into combat.

Throughout the movie, Doss slowly beings to gain the respect of soldiers as he saves more lives. At the battle of Hacksaw Ridge, Desmond Doss saves 75 soldiers who were previously thought to be dead. He saves each soldier by carrying them to the edge of a cliff and repelling them down to his unit below.

Later in the movie, Doss reveals he doesn’t carry a gun because of when his father pointed a gun at his mother in a drunken rage.

Doss is eventually wounded while protecting his brothers from grenades thrown by the Japanese. He was hitting back enemy grenades and one exploded just as he hit it. He was taken home to receive medical treatment and a medal of honor for his achievements.

At the end of the movie Doss is congratulated and thanked by many of the men who once rejected him.

Hacksaw Ridge is an amazing movie, but not one to watch with children due to the fact that it is very graphic. It is also very emotional- I cried my way through it. The movie definitely made my top 10 favorite movies to watch list.

Hacksaw Ridge, making just shy of 70 million dollars, was an extreme success.
